The differences between French and American Roulette

The French (European) Roulette:

The game is played on a roulette table, with the roulette wheel (Single-zero wheel with 37 numbers) on one end; and the betting area on the other end. The French roulette has a total of 36 red and black numbers, which are spread out in three long rows. To the right and left of these rows there are additional betting fields, where players, may place bets on additional outcomes; red or black, even or uneven, or ranges from 11 to 18 and 29 to 36. These outcomes are the easy chances.
Beyond that players may place multiple bets on one or multiple numbers. It is therefore possible to place a bet on four numbers in a square layout (Corner), on two adjoining numbers (Split), etc. the options for placing bets are ample. A particular feature in French Roulette is the green zero. Should the ball fall into this pocket the bank wins in the majority of the cases, unless a player has placed a bet on the zero. Should a zero fall, bets with easy chances are locked, meaning that players may win back their wager in the next round. An example would be, if you place a bet on black, but the zero falls (green), then your bet will remain on black until the next round.
Should black fall in the next round you’ll get your wager back, should red fall, you loose.

The American Roulette:

In principle the game is the identical to the French Roulette, with a few exceptions. The most prevalent is that there are 38 instead of 37 numbers, as there is a second zero, the double zero, which increases the house edge by quite a bit. The special rule, that easy bets may remain for a second round, if a zero falls do not exist in the American roulette version.

Further variances are in regards to the set up of the betting area, the table is a little smaller in the American roulette version, allowing players to place their own bets,
rather than having the dealers place them for them, as in French roulette.

The language at the table is English not French, so names change accordingly. The roulette wheel is also slightly different as there is an extra pocket for the double zero, hanging the outline of the wheel. Still the numbers are arranged in a way that every number has the same chance of being hit.

The last difference pertains the chips in use; these do not have to have a fixed value as in the European version of the game, but may be personalized. When purchasing chips, the player sets the value, and may play with these until he leaves the table.
